OBTAINING A PROTECTIVE ORDER DURING A DIVORCE IN TENNESSEE

14 Aug

IF YOU ARE IN A DIVORCE OR POTENTIAL DIVORCE SITUATION AND ARE ENCOUNTERING ABUSE, THREATS, STALKING OR OTHER SITUATIONS THAT MAKE YOU FEAR FOR YOUR SAFETY, YOU CAN GO TO YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND APPLY FOR A PROTECTIVE ORDER.

PROTECTIVE ORDERS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR ONE (1) YEAR; HOWEVER, THEY CAN BE MODIFIED BY THE COURT.

IF GUN VIOLENCE IS INVOLVED, YOU CAN ALSO ASK THE JUDGE TO WRITE IN A PROVISION INTO THE ORDER THAT THE ACCUSED MAY NOT BUY OR POSSESS A GUN FOR THE DURATION OF THE PROTECTIVE ORDER.
