Homicides Going Down

27 Mar

ACCORDING TO WILLIAM VOGELER, ESQ. ON MAY 31, 2019, STATISTICS SHOW THAT HOMICIDES HAVE DECREASED AT THE TURN OF THE 21ST CENTURY.  THE THEORY THAT HAS RECENTLY EMERGED MAY SURPRISE YOU.  RESEARCHERS ARE NOW SAYING THAT THE DECREASE IN HOMICIDES ARE DUE TO CELL PHONES. LENA EDLUND, WHO IS A COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY ECONOMIST AND CECILIA MACHADO OF THE GETULIO VARGUS FOUNDATION PUBLISHED A RECENT PAPER IN THE NATIONAL BUREAU OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH PROPOSING THAT CELL PHONES ACCOUNT FOR 19% TO 29% OF THE DECLINE IN HOMICIDE FROM 1990 TO 2000.  WHY?  IN THE 1980s, GANGS HAD TO ATTACK AND DEFEND THEIR TERRITORIES, FIGHTING OFF THE COMPETITION FOR DRUG SALES.  IN THE 1990S THEY FOUND A WORK-AROUND FROM ALL THE TURF BATTLES WITH CELL PHONES. OBVIOUSLY, THERE ARE OTHER REASONS FOR THE DECLINE IN CRIME.  THE BRENNAN CENTER FOR JUSTICE HAS FOUND THE FOLLOWING:  (1) INCREASED INCARCARATION; (2) MORE POLICE OFFICERS; (3) AN AGING POPULATION; (4) LESS ALCOHOL USE; AND (5) LOWER UNEMPLOYMENT. I’M NOT QUITE SURE IF IT MEETS THE STRICT SCIENTIFIC STANDARDS OF FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY YET, BUT IT IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.
