CRIMINAL LAW IN TENNESSEE-DRUG SENTENCING

23 Oct

THERE HAS BEEN A TREND FOR STATES TO RECONSIDER HOW THEY PUNISH DRUG OFFENDERS.  THERE HAS BEEN A MOVEMENT GENERALLY TO REDUCE SOME OF THE CRIMINAL PENALTIES AND PROVIDE FUNDING TO ENSURE THAT STATES HAVE EFFECTIVE COMMUNITY SUPERVISION AND TREATMENT OPTIONS. SMALL AMOUNTS OF MARIJUANA FOR ADULT RECREATIONAL USE HAVE BEEN LEGALIZED IN ALASKA, COLORADO, OREGON, WASHINGTON AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.  THE STATE OF TENNESSEE WILL LIKELY BE THE LAST STATE TO EVER GO THAT FAR.  THE LEGISLATURE IN TENNESSEE JUST BUMPED THE ISSUE OF LEGALIZATION OF MEDICAL MARIJUANA TO THE 2020 LEGISLATIVE SESSION. HEROIN IS BACK ON THE RISE.  DEATHS RELATED TO HEROIN HAVE ALMOST QUADRUPLED BETWEEN 2002 AND 2013.  PRESCRIPTION OPIOID OVERDOSES KILL MORE AMERICANS THAN ALL OTHER DRUGS COMBINED.
